I'll probably bump this over to the collider in a couple of days, I don't really have any comments or anything about this, straight reposting for interest.
Though I wouldn't exactly characterize this as "mistaken identity gone wrong" as the lead in to the one story states.

Wow I saw that headline on CBC a while back but didn't realize that's what it was... that is a terrible situation. I wonder if there is anything that's going to be done to make amends? With that kind of damage, he's going to be out of commission for awhile. Someone going to cover his living expenses while he's recovering? Hmm.
Seems that while it was an extreme situation, it is also an honest mistake. The real mistake was that they started hammering on the guy as an initial response. If he wasn't fighting back... where is the justification for that? Doesn't matter if he's guilty or not, you don't beat the crap out of someone who isn't fighting back.
