How do you like to keep in touch with friends and family that don't live nearby?

Moi

This will vary depending on the person but, in general, I find facebook the most convenient way to keep in touch with a large number of friends and family. You can drop little messages, send emails (without worrying which of 12 accounts to use), see their pictures, see any comments they make, etc.

I usually only call my mom (try for at least once a week, Sunday) and my sister (not at set times, try for once a week).

I like email for conversations and such.

I never use IM.

I can't remember the last time I sent a letter. I do try and send Xmas and sometimes b-day cards.

I prefer IM/chat. Since I have a very active toddler IM/chat seems to be the only way I can keep in touch right now without having to worry about the person on the other line having to endure my son's random screaming outbursts (he likes screaming, he thinks its fun).

IM feels the closest to a REAL conversation to me. I can give/get instant feedback from the other person I am conversing with. Social networking sites worry me, so I don't post very many real personal updates, pictures or information... Too many people have had accounts hacked into and sometimes the privacy settings seem a bit wonky. Also, facebook and such seems a bit one sided to me... like, I throw something out there and really don't care about what others have to say. I know that is just me though, others find it perfect for their needs. Email is just too slow for me, I don't really feel like I can carry on a good convo through email.

Overall, I would say I prefer the phone, but right now it is nearly impossible for me to find the time to actually talk to someone on the phone.

Oops

Should I have put strangequarks on as a separate listing? I don't exactly consider this a keep in touch site - but maybe others do. My bad.

I don't consider SQ a keep touch site. I do sometimes pop in just to see what others are up to (mainly by reading blogs), but this is not where I go to really keep in touch.

as mentioned

As i mention in my other post, SQ absolutely does fall under the description of a social networking site. It's just a lot smaller than Facebook or MySpace, but it's all built on exactly the same idea and pretty much exactly the same kind of functionality.

little of this, a little of that (other)

I really find it depends on the circumstance. For some people, email is the only reliable way because of the nature of the situation. For others, multiple avenues are available and are used variously depending on the conditions of the communication. Social networking is ideal for distance conversations between multiple people (SQ is social networking).

The only thing that's really out is letters and cards. I really just don't do that. It doesn't make sense to me to write a letter - an agonizingly slow process compared to typing - and then spend money on envelopes and stamps. Email is free and accomplishes the same task better and faster.

Agree

On the money and waste. But I still find it more personal to send something handwritten - in some cases.

Plus my handwriting is atrocious. It's pretty cruel to force it on others!

Letters/Cards

I only send cards. Mainly: Thank You, Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Congratulations. I am still old fashioned when it comes to those and I believe that handwritten is best for such occasions.
